He aha tēnei kaupapa?

Attitude has been talking about sex since the 90’s

Thanks to support from Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu we have updated our programme to help support rangatahi Māori

The world has changed a lot since we started over 20 years ago and so has our programme. Changes like access to pornography, the normalisation of sexting and the increase of online relationships means that sharing wisdom around making healthy choices is more important than ever.

Some things remain the same. Sex can still make babies, we still have high STI rates and it’s still awkward watching a health teacher demonstrating how a condom works.

Attitude presenters are pros at delivering engaging talks about sex and relationships.

That’s why we are committed to our kaupapa of inspiring young people towards making healthy choices in all areas of their lives.

We have recently collaborated with Te Pūtahitanga to redevelop and contextualise our programme for rangatahi Māori in our modern world. We have consulted with experts, kura and young people to inform our updated presentation. This will be delivered by one of our Māori presenters using ideas, language, and frameworks unique to Aotearoa and tailored for young people.

Our assembly-style presentation discusses the following topics

  • Accessing sexual health support

  • Contraception

  • STI’s

  • Consent

  • Pornography

  • Nudes/Sexting

  • Healthy relationships

  • Respect and values

Our presentation is not only informative, inclusive, engaging and inspiring but our presenters are especially selected and trained for their unique ability to connect with young people and embody the positive messages.

Is this presentation only for akonga Māori?

We are specifically offering this funded presentation to schools with akonga Māori.

However all students at your school will benefit from this talk as the topic is universally relevant and the messages are valuable for everyone regardless of cultural background.

You may prefer to only invite the akonga Māori but this talk can be delivered to a multicultural audience and will include everyone.

How has the presentation been developed to connect better with akonga Māori?

Moe, tutu, whawha, kinikini, ai, onioni, oneone, mahimahi, ekeeke, pīkanikani… there’s a lot of kupu for “it”. It’s evident from waiata, pūrakau and korero that Māori culture has a place for discussing sex in a healthy and “normal” way.

We aim to create a space in our presentations to discuss this topic in a way that’s not “taboo” just like how our tipuna could korero about it back in the day.

Research shows that rangatahi Māori have poorer sexual health outcomes including decreased contraception use and are less likely to engage with sexual health services and support. We want to address the disparities for vulnerable rangatahi Māori in terms of sexual health awareness, access, and outcomes in Te Waipounamu.

We have colaborated with Te Pūtahitanga o Te Wai Pounamu to develop a presenation using a kaupapa Māori framework supported by Māori narratives and the Whānau Ora approach.

The framework provides the central foundation by which all whānau aspirations are measured, monitored, and reported. The Pou that we focus on include:

Pou Tahi: Self-managing and empowered leaders.

Pou Rua: Leading healthy lifestyles.

Pou Toru: Participating fully in society.

Pou Ono: Cohesive, resilient, and nurturing.

We have consulted with Māori educators, Te Ira Tangata and Te Aho Matua for insights on teaching and reaching rangatahi māori which has informed our content development throughout this project.

This content will be delivered by one of our Māori presenters who is an expert in connecting with young people and has a passion for empowering our rangatahi. The presentation will be bi-lingual using Te Reo Māori weaved throughout but easy to follow for all audiences. We want to whakamana all Māori in attendance regardless of their reo comprehension level.

Our content is informed by the Ministry of Education’s Relationship and Sexuality Education guide. We have implemented matauranga Māori concepts throughout our sexual health psychology themes such as hauora, whanaungatanga, kaitiakitanga, mana and tapu.
